The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has denied engaging in illegal mining popularly known as ‘galamsey’. Their reaction comes on the back of a media discussion which indicated that soldiers were involved in the illegality by aiding some illegal miners. Almost two months since Unicef director Charlotte Nikoi’s disappearance, President Jacob Zuma appealed to anyone who may have information to come forward and assist the police with their investigation. Nikoi, a Ghanaian national, is reported to have arrived in Cape Town on March 17 on holiday and to celebrate her wedding anniversary with her family. Ghanaians, especially those in the rural areas, risk developing cancer due to high levels of pollution of water bodies. According to the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA), small scale illegal mining activities have left a number of streams polluted with arsenic, a chemical which causes cancer over a period of time. The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Peter Amewu has stated emphatically that the media misinterpreted a BNI report when they linked the Okyenhene’s palace to activities of illegal miners in Kibi area. Sunda International, a Chinese company operating in Ghana, has donated several household items worth thousands of Ghana cedis to families of the Accra Stadium disaster which occurred 16 years ago on May 9 2001. The police in Tema resorted to the firing of gas on angry youth in an area called U-Town at Tema New Town during a stand-off between the youth and the police Tuesday morning. The youth attacked the police for allegedly killing one of their colleagues last night. Pedestrians who cross road indiscriminately are to be prosecuted in order to reduce carnage on the roads, the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) has warned. The officer in charge of Education, Research and Training of the MTTD, DSP Alexander Obeng observed that persons who have been knocked down by vehicles in the first quarter of this year are more than that of last year.
