Two babies were safely delivered on Ghana’s 60th independence day at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital in the Central Region. Although four deliveries were expected on the day, only two women were delivered as at 4:30pm on Monday, March 6, 2017. Traders were not left out of Ghana’s 60th Independence Anniversary celebration on Monday as they took advantage of the large crowd around the fringes of the Independence Square to make brisk business. Some were trading in the 60th anniversary cloth, while others were selling items including bangles, scarf and vuvuzelas, as well as T’-Shirts, sandals and caps designed in the national colours Red, Yellow, Green and Black. For the first time in many years the spirit of patriotism resonated in the camp of head porters popularly called kayayei or paoopa as they joyously participated in the Ghana’s 60 years anniversary parade. The move could be a thank you gesture to President Nana Akufo-Addo following the abolishment of the tolls they pay as kayayei levy at market centres to district assemblies. The President, Nana Akufo-Addo has decried the degree at which the environment has been degraded, noting that Ghana’s dense forest has been depleted to the extent that the country imports timber.
