The General Manager in charge of Business Banking at the Consolidated Bank Ghana, Michael Kwansah, has advised entrepreneurs with dollar facilities with banks to convert their loans to cedis or quickly pay off as early as possible to avoid running at a loss. The value of the Ghanaian cedi has fallen 56 percent this year against the US dollar (USD). Over 25 percent of that loss was in October alone, as decline of the cedi accelerated at its sharpest rate since it was re-denominated 15 years ago. He said: “Because the cedi is significantly depreciating, your facility in USD will require you…
The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has advised government of the need to rebalance its budgetary allocations from compensation to capital expenditure in a bid to drive economic growth. Government spending is currently strongly biased toward recurring expenses rather than capital ones – which results in incorrect prioritisation of expenses that is detrimental to the progress of the nation. Recurrent expenses make up over 90 percent of the total in the 2022 budget, and capital expenses (CAPEX) make up the rest. 14 percent of total income comes from CAPEX – which is very low (2.3 percent of GDP) and a…

About a dozen Twitter staff based in Ghana, which was the firm’s only office in Africa, have rejected a severance package offered to them and are now considering taking legal action. The staff’s legal firm has told the BBC that Twitter wants to negotiate the severance package and termination process, but it did not provide details of how it will do so. The layoffs were part of a global staff cull introduced by new boss Elon Musk. The employees, who spoke on condition of anonymity, argue that they have been short-changed. They have hired lawyers to initiate talks with Ghana’s labour…
Timothy Weah, the son of Liberia’s President George Weah, scored for the US in their World Cup opener against Wales that ended in a draw. Tim Weah finished smartly after a surging run and pass by Christian Pulisic. Gareth Bale rode to Wales’ rescue with a late penalty. President Weah is in Qatar for nine days to watch his American-born son play in the World Cup. His trip has sparked controversy back home after the country’s finance minister said the president was “entitled” to $2,000 (£1,700) daily allowance during his stay in Qatar. Critics say awarding Mr Weah such a huge amount…
Many of those killed and injured in a major earthquake on the Indonesian island of Java were children who were at school when it hit, rescuers say. Aprizal Mulyadi, 14, said he was trapped after “the room collapsed and my legs were buried under the rubble”. He said he was pulled to safety by his friend Zulfikar, who then later died after himself becoming trapped. The local administration in Cianjur says the death toll has risen to 252 people. ADVERTISEMENT Earlier on Tuesday Indonesia’s national disaster response agency, the BNPB, put confirmed deaths at 103 with 31 people missing -…
We are only two days into this World Cup and already we are seeing a theme developing: Stoppage-time. And lots of it. The four games so far have had nearly 65 minutes added on between them, with England’s match against Iran lasting an incredible 117 minutes and 16 seconds. That was partly down to injury – Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand suffered concussion after a nasty clash of heads early on. But it is also part of a concerted effort by Fifa to clamp down on time-wasting by more accurately monitoring the amount of time the game is stopped. Reasons the game is…
Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta may face an unprecedented situation if he disregards calls for his resignation and attempts to present the budget on Thursday. Both majority and minority members are likely to abandon the Chamber making it impossible for him to have the constitutional quorum required to proceed with the budget presentation. Mr. Ofori-Atta last week told JoyNews he will present the 2023 budget despite facing a censure motion moved by the Minority to oust him. Worst still, 98 Members of Parliament from his own political party, the New Patriotic Party, who are on the majority side also want him removed.…
