Madagascar’s education minister has been fired over plans to order more than $2m (£1.6m) worth of sweets for schoolchildren. Rijasoa Andriamanana said pupils would be given three lollipops each to mask the “bitter” aftertaste of an untested herbal remedy for coronavirus. With less than three weeks to the start of the compilation of a new voter’s register, the Electoral Commission is yet to receive the full consignment of kits purchased for the exercise. The Commission has procured 8,000 biometric voter registration (BVR) kits to be used for the June-July registration and elections in December respectively. The World Health Organization (WHO) has changed its advice on face masks, saying they should be worn in public to help stop the spread of coronavirus. The global body said new information showed they could provide “a barrier for potentially infectious droplets”. Some countries around the world already recommend or mandate the wearing of face coverings in public. Two solid waste landfill sites at Kpone and Asokore Mampong are to be decommissioned and re-engineered by the government as a multi-purpose recreational centre.
