The eastern Indian city of Kolkata has been devastated by a powerful cyclone. Cyclone Amphan made landfall in eastern India and Bangladesh on Wednesday, killing at least 15 people as it lashed coastal areas with ferocious wind and rain. At least 300 people have been killed in a fresh wave of intercommunal fighting in South Sudan, authorities say. Dozens of homes in Jonglei state were destroyed, warehouses belonging to aid groups were raided, and women and cattle were abducted. Three aid workers were among those killed. Over 7,000 government employees were unaccounted for on government payroll system, according to the Auditor-General’s Department. The report emanated after a nationwide enumeration exercise embarked on by the Auditor-General to audit government payroll system. The figure, when quantified into monitory, runs into millions of Ghana cedis annually which goes into the pockets of what the department termed as “unaccounted for employment” normally refers to as ghost names. The Dansoman Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Jeffrey Darko, has discounted claims that his outfit has recorded two coronavirus cases. Ninety–four thousand teachers in private schools have been laid off in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic in the country, according to data provided by the Ghana National Council of Private Schools. Most of these teachers who earn between 250 to 400 cedis a month have also not been paid salaries from March till date. Private schools contribute about 43 percent of the country’s education sector with over 400,000 workforce.
