One hundred and twenty-one new coronavirus cases have seen Ghana’s tally shot up to 1,671. The number of recoveries has also moved up from the previous 155 to 188, the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye announced Tuesday. A 42-year-old woman has been arrested at Asikuma in the Oti Region for allegedly making a fake baby bump out of slabs of compressed dried leaves which immigration officials suspected to be Indian hemp. Mavis Adubea who is from Nkonya, is said to be a businesswoman who plies her trade in Takoradi. At least seven women in Ghana are said to have tested positive for the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) who are pregnant. Virologist at Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR), Dr. Michael Owusu has called for more hands as well as logistics to enhance the capacity of rapid testing at the center. A third of all coronavirus deaths in England and Wales are now happening in care homes, figures show. Office for National Statistics data showed there were 2,000 coronavirus care home deaths in the week ending 17 April – double the previous week. Projections for the following week – up to last Friday – suggested the numbers have since continued to rise. It comes as coronavirus hospital deaths have started falling after peaking on 8 April. The Director of Communications at the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has maintained that the government is committed to completing “abandoned” hospitals in addition to the 88 district hospitals.
