The Bawku West District Assembly in the Upper East region has for the second time in two weeks failed to elect a presiding member after two rounds of voting.
At the end of the first round of voting on Thursday January 30, none of the two candidates secured the two-thirds of the total votes cast to emerge the winner.
Assembly member for Zebilla central electoral Atiah Kurugu, who is a teacher, polled 32 votes in the first round while his contender, Alfred Ndaugo, a retired educationist, polled 18 votes.
The second round saw the teacher securing 31 votes with the retired educationist getting 19 votes.
The Assembly is composed of 50 members of which 34 are elected and 15 are government appointees.
Acting District Coordinating Director, Mr. Elias Atimbire had prior to the voting pleaded with the assembly members to collaborate and choose a leader who would steer the affairs of the assembly to facilitate development in the district.
He noted that the absence of a Presiding Member for the past three years was affecting the Assembly’s decision-making process and implementation of projects and programmes.
DCE for the area, Madam Victoria Ayamba expressed worry at the turn of events, but was however confident that a substantive presiding member would be elected at the next General Assembly meeting.
She called on the assembly members to be united for the development of the district.
