Class Media Group has expressed deep concern over an assault on one of its journalist by personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
The incident is said to have occurred at Kasoa New Market as the personnel was fighting a fire outbreak.
Viral videos showed officers of GNFS physically attacking a gentleman whose identity was later made known as a journalist by name Samuel Addo of Class FM, a subsidiary of Class Media Group.
GNFS had, however, earlier indicated that its personnel had an altercation with a suspected thief “who had earlier attacked firefighters along with a group of accomplices at the fire scene”.
But it said a committee has been established to ascertain the truth.
In a statement issued on Monday, January 5, Class Media Group Chief Executive Officer Alhaji Seidu Agongo noted: “Such incidents not only threaten press freedom and the safety of journalists but also undermine Ghana’s credibility and standing as a champion of media rights.
“We urge the relevant authorities to conduct a swift and impartial investigation to establish the facts and ensure accountability.”
Alhaji Agongo explained that the journalist was just performing his “lawful” duties.
“We expect full cooperation from all parties to safeguard media practitioners,” he demanded, assuring that “we remain committed to promoting responsible journalism and call for calm as this matter is addressed”.
