Seven persons lost their lives on Monday, January 12 following a road accident at Komenda Asamasa on the Cape Coast-Takoradi highway.
The accident involved a Sprinter Bus with registration number GS 6705-21 and a Man Diesel Truck with registration number GS 8394 Y and travelling from Takoradi towards Cape Coast.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), its Komenda Fire Station had a distress call around 7:25pm about the fatal accident.
It’s rescue team promptly extricated six trapped victims from the Sprinter bus, which was travelling from Komenda to Takoradi.
“All six (6) were pronounced dead on arrival at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, while another casualty (female) who had earlier been taken to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital was also pronounced dead, bringing the total fatalities to seven (7),” the Service said.
The deceased comprised three females, including a pregnant woman, one baby, and three males.
“Additionally, eighteen (18) people who sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rescued before the arrival of the GNFS rescue team are currently receiving medical treatment at the hospital.”
According to eye witnesses, the Man Diesel truck lost control while overtaking another vehicle and collided head-on with the Sprinter bus, which was seen in the nearby bush.
“After the rescue operation, GNFS personnel cleared debris from the roadway to restore the free flow of traffic and ensure safety at the accident scene.”
