Effective midnight, Sunday March 22, Ghana will close all its borders to human movement in and out of the country as a way of mitigating the spread of the coronavirus which the country has so far recorded 21 confirmed cases.
According to President Akufo-Addo who made the announce late Saturday, March 21, the border closure has become very necessary and will last for at least two weeks. He however noted the closure “will not apply to goods, supplies and cargo.”
“All our borders; by land, sea and air, will be closed to human traffic for the next two weeks beginning midnight on Sunday,” he said.
He mentioned among other things government’s plans to procure 50,000 additional testing kits, engagement of the services of more health professionals and the closure of all borders effective Sunday midnight, as a way of reducing the spread of the coronavirus.
President Akufo-Addo said the government’s aim with all its measures are to “limit and stop the importation of the virus; contain its spread; provide adequate care for the sick; limit the impact of the virus on social and economic life and inspire the expansion of our domestic capability and deepen our self-reliance.”
He also declared that Wednesday, March 25 be observed as a national day of fasting and prayer, in addition to the other measures put in place to overcome the pandemic.
