Ghana will for the second consecutive time take part in the United Nations simulation World Youth Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa from September 30 to October 2, 2019.
The forum, predominantly of young people across the globe, will among other things discuss and promote quality education in accordance with the fourth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) in its second edition.
Scheduled to be held at the University of the Witwatersrand, the summit is expected to host over 500 young people, including Ghanaians, who will debate on matters that affect the youth and the world at large.
The second edition comes on the heels of a successful maiden edition which convened participants from more than 15 diversified nations across the world at North Cyprus, Turkey, from 26th to 28th of April earlier in the year.
Dubbed “World Youth Summit Act 2 Johannesburg”, the event will be hosted by the South African BRICS Youth Association (SABYA), a non-profit organization in Pretoria focused on the issues affecting young people.
Only a few delegates from Ghana participated in the maiden edition, but it’s expected that the number of Ghanaian representations would increase significantly this year, considering the success and publicity the programme has gained.
Secretary-General of World Youth Summit, Fawad Ali Langah, in an invitation letter said: “It gives me immense pleasure to inform and invite you to the World Youth Summit act 2 Johannesburg, South Africa hosted by South African BRICS Youth Association (SABYA), going to be held at The University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg”.
The 3-day programme will start with a simulation of seven diversified committees of the UN, comprising the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), General Assembly Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC), United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations Women (UNW) and, the African Union (AU).
It is aimed at giving an opportunity to participants or delegates to engage themselves with the dynamics of international relations by assuming the roles of world leaders and influential decision-makers.
The programme will also provide an opportunity for delegates to improve their skills in many domains such as teamwork, negotiation, leadership and public speaking while motivating them to activate and participate in the UN’s Agenda 2030. The focal theme will be on SDG 4: Education.
To climax the programme, organisations have promised participants a tour of the Johannesburg City, a Cultural Night and Ambassador dinner, “so they can end up with great learning and leave this conference into high notes with golden memory of their respective desires”.
Meanwhile, Ghana’s Ambassadors for the Summit,Yvette Asamoah, Selasi Nyakpo, Gilbert Aboagye Boye, Emmanuel Anyorikeya , Frankline Nadembega and John Aggrey are encouraging more youth around the world, especially Ghana, to take advantage of the Summit to contribute to youth development and networking.
