Key Stakeholders Must Understand Sportsmanship In Football- Kyere-Duah On Curbing Football Violence In Ghana

Member of Parliament for Berekum West, Dickson Kyere-Duah, is pleased with measures taken to curb crowd violence in Ghana football but was quick to note that educating fans to understand the concept of sportsmanship remains the biggest issue in addressing crowd violence at football centres in Ghana.

He made this known in an exclusive interview with Citi Sports on the sidelines of Day 2 of the Black Stars training session held in preparation for 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar on March 21 and March 24 respectively.

The Member of Parliament who has vociferously campaigned against such violent acts, made this comment in the wake of improved security at Ghana Premier League centres following the death of Kumasi Asante Kotoko fan Francis “Pooley” Frimpong during Kotoko’s league clash against Nsoatreman.

“I am very happy all these (security) proposals have been taken on board and being implemented at the moment. I must say…we are still seeing few incidents (of violence) here and there and I must say the (security) action themselves may not be enough unless the key stakeholders, the supporters, the football administrators and all the architects understand the reality and the sportsmanship in football” he said before adding that “It doesn’t matter the situation on the ground, violence is not the way to settle matters; we have to follow due procedure.”

Competition in the GPL commenced recently after a multiple week suspension due to Pooley’s death.
