KNUST Vice Chancellor asked to handover to Pro-Vice Chancellor (Update)

Government has asked the Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Prof. Kwasi Obiri-Danso to step aside, 3news.com has gathered. The embattled Vice Chancellor who is at the centre of the violent protest by students of the University on Monday has been accused of highhandedness when it comes to students affairs. It is quite sketchy if the decision to let Prof. Obiri-Danso recuse himself was recommended by the interim council constituted by the Education Ministry to investigation the cause of the violent demonstration among others. But 3news.com understands the Vice-Chancellor has duly been informed by the National Council for Tertiary Education to step aside for the interim council to do its work within the next three months. Read: Gov’t defers to NCTE to determine KNUST VC’s fate Prof. Kwasi Obiri-Danso was inducted as the 12th Vice Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in May 2016. He has been asked to handover the “day-to-day administration of the university” to the Pro-Vice Chancellor. The Pro-Vice Chancellor, according to a statement signed by the Executive Secretary of NCTE Mohammed Salifu, “shall act until otherwise advised”. Meanwhile, the KNUST branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana as well as the local branch of Ghana Association of University Administrators have protested against the dissolution of the Governing Council of the University. Subsequently, they have withdrawn their services insisting that the Governing Council should be reinstated, but that request may not be granted as the Vice Chancellor has been asked to step aside.
