The Ghana Education Service (GES) has slapped a two-year ban on three senior high schools including Koforidua Senior High and Technical School following violence at the Eastern Regional Inter-schools sports festival.
The SHSs have been barred from organising, participating in or spectating not only at sporting events but also co-curricular programmes such as quizzes, debates, cadet and entertainment ceremonies.
New Juaben SHS and New Nsutem SHTS are the other schools.
In addition to the ban, each of the three schools has been fined GH¢500 and surcharged for any costs arising from damage to property and injury to individuals.
According to a press release issued by the Eastern Region Director of Education, Ivy Asantewaa Owusu, the decision was taken per Section 2.17 of the GES Code of Conduct on physical and psychological violence as well as the Code of Discipline of the Eastern Regional Schools and Colleges Sports Association.
The press release observed that students from the three schools were found guilty of acts of hooliganism against the various codes cited above.
It cited articles VII and VIII which address disturbances, riots and hooliganism and sanctions and punishment respectively.
The alleged incidents of gang rape and stabbing were also contained in the statement.
