NDC cautions against fingering Ken Agyapong in Anas man’s murder

NDC’s General Secretary pointed at the weak leadership of President Akufo-Addo

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly condemned the killing of Ahmed Hussein-Suale, a member of the Tiger Eye PI team.

Ahmed Hussein-Suale was shot dead on Wednesday night while returning to his Madina home from work.

In a statement released on Friday, Ghana’s largest opposition party asked all and sundry to be wary in scapegoating the Member of Parliament for Assin Central Constituency, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

Barely 24 hours after the crime was committed, head of investigative firm Tiger Eye PI Anas Aremeyaw Anas posted, on Twitter, a video excerpted from Who Watches The Watchman?, the reprisal documentary produced by the MP.

Sad news, but we shall not be silenced. Rest in peace, Ahmed. #JournalismIsNotACrime #SayNoToCorruption pic.twitter.com/Gk2Jdgo6Sn

— Anas Aremeyaw Anas (@anasglobal) January 17, 2019

The firebrand politician vehemently rejected any implicit implication at his person, ricocheting the blame to Anas and his lawyer, Kissi Adjabeng.

According to him, the award-winning investigative journalist may have a hand in the crime and should not be overlooked.

Describing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP’s call in his documentary shown on June 27, 2018 as “outrageous”, the NDC stated that his scapegoating could be “a ruse to cover up a potentially more sinister plot behind this killing”.

The deceased was a key figure in the exposé on corruption in Ghana football, an investigation which shook up the foundations of the discipline.

It led to the resignation of the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, and the grinding to a halt of football in the country. He was also banned by FIFA.

Dubbed ‘Number 12: When Misconduct and Greed Become The Norm’, the investigation also cited the presidency.

NDC’s statement noted: “Given the huge embarrassment the ‘Number 12’ video brought to persons at the highest levels of government, especially the exposure of a bribe collection syndicate at the Presidency helmed by President Akufo-Addo himself, we expect that any investigation into the killing of Ahmed Suale would be all-encompassing.

“We expect that no one, irrespective of their exalted position, would be deemed untouchable in the investigations.”

‘Weak Akufo-Addo’

NDC’s statement signed by General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia bemoaned the descent of the country under the presidency of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as regards security.

It cited the recent assassinations and “gangster-styled executions” as reminiscent of the contract killings under former president John Agyekum Kufuor.

According to the NDC, the situation “speaks to the weak leadership of President Akufo-Addo”.

“Beyond flowery rhetoric, he is clearly unable to get a handle on the key issues affecting the people, not least among them security.”

It asked President Akufo-Addo to immediately come out with a plan “which sets out a clear and comprehensive strategy aimed at protecting Ghanaians and halting these violent killings”.
