The First Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Eastern Region, Alhaji Umar Bodinga, says that the tag that his party is “anti-northerners” is past and gone.
He said that was what opponents were propagating all along to impugn the unity within the party.
“We have passed that,” Alhaji Bodinga said on Onua FM’s Ghana Dadwen on Friday in a special programme ahead of 2018 National Annual Delegates’ Conference of the ruling party.
He said the party has matured to a level where the achievements and contribution of executives will be rewarded.
“The encouragement for the winning team will show [on Saturday] at the [Koforidua Technical University] park,” he said in Akan.
Close to 6,000 delegates from across national and overseas branches will gather at the venue in Koforidua to elect new executives for the next four years.
There are a number of aspirants of northern descent contesting for elections.
Among these are Agnes Asangalisa Chigabatia, who is aspiring for a First National Vice Chair position, Rita Talata Asobayire (National Vice Chair), Hajia Ruka Saida Ahmed (National Treasurer-aspirant), Kamal-Deen Abdulai (National Youth Organiser-aspirant) and Joyce Konokie Zempare (National Women’s Organiser).
“We should look at their contribution. That is most important.”
The Eastern Region executive recalled the ignominy some elected executives of northern descent brought the party in the run-up to the 2016 elections, alluding to suspended National Chairman Paul Awentami Afoko.
He said the party has put that episode behind it and lessons have been learnt.
