OSP to assess extortion allegations against Afenyo-Markin

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has confirmed it is taking note of public allegations of extortion made against the Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, by the Chief Executive of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi.

In a public notice dated Monday, August 24, the OSP said it had also received a joint petition submitted by two persons, as well as two separate petitions filed by other individuals, in relation to the allegations.

The anti-graft body said it would assess the case to determine whether it falls within its statutory mandate and whether further investigative action is warranted.

The allegations stem from an escalating public dispute between Mr Gyamfi and Mr Afenyo-Markin over reported losses linked to the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP), operated through GoldBod.

The dispute followed claims that the International Monetary Fund (IMF), in its latest report, indicated GoldBod incurred losses of about GH¢22 billion, roughly US$1.7 billion, under the programme in 2025.

Amid the back-and-forth over the DGPP losses, Mr Gyamfi alleged that the Minority Leader demanded $1 million from him, branding him an “extortionist.”

He has since dared Mr Afenyo-Markin to sue him if he considers the description defamatory, insisting he has evidence to support the claim and is prepared to defend it in court.

Mr Afenyo-Markin has not filed a lawsuit over the remarks.

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has separately issued a formal statement rejecting the allegations, insisting its concerns over GoldBod’s financial losses were drawn from the IMF report rather than partisan motives, and has called on GoldBod to appear before a parliamentary inquiry to reconcile its audited financial statements with the Fund’s findings.
