The Ashanti Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service has interdicted the officer who shot at a fan of Asante Kotoko after the club’s 0-1 loss to Berekum Chelsea on Sunday.
The officer was interdicted at the instruction of the regional commander, Akwasi Mensah Duku.
The Command has already launched investigations into the incident and has promised to bring all found culpable to book.
This follows a similar assurance by the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
The incident was said to have been fuelled by a refereeing decision that led to Berekum Chelsea ending the winning run of the Porcupine Warriors.
A seventh-minute strike by Kofi Owusu dealt a serious blow to Maxwell Konadu’s side’s dream of keeping a 100 per cent record in the 2019/20 Ghana Premier League.
Supporters threw objects onto the pitch targetted at referee Charles Bulu.
But police intervened as tension rose after the match.
The supporters are said to have pelted police officers with stones and the law-enforcement officers fired warning shots to disperse the crowd.
Addressing journalists in the Ashanti Region capital of Kumasi on Monday, January 13, Public Relations Officer of the Command Chief Superintendent Godwin Ahianyo expressed sympathies to the injured person, who is said to be in stable condition.
“The Command sympathises with the injured person’s family and wish the injured a speedy recovery.”
C/Supt. Ahianyo called on the public, particularly those with pictures and videos, to present them to the police as investigations continue.
He said the interdicted officer will know his fate after the investigations.
“When it is found out that maybe he did his duties as expected of him, then whatever is supposed to be spelt out is spelt out.”
The Ashanti Regional Police PRO advised all supporters and football fans to be restrained in trying to vex their anger at decisions of match officials.
“We also want to use this occasion to tell our football fans that when you go to the stadium and you have any concern, you need not to resort to violence.”
