President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged Muslims to be alert to activities of agent provocateurs in the face of Ghana’s world-acclaimed religious tolerance.
He, therefore, asked them to report “suspicious” persons they encounter in their communities to the police.
President Akufo-Addo gave this admonition on Wednesday while addressing Muslims at the Black Stars Square as they marked this year’s Eid-ul Fitr.
The celebration marks the end of the 30 days of fasting, Ramadan.
Addressing the gathering, among whom was centenarian Chief Imam Shiekh Osman Nuhu Shaributu, the president recounted numerous situations of religious tolerance recorded in Ghana, to the admiration of many.
He recounted how the Chief Imam spent the 2019 Easter Sunday at the Christ the King Roman Catholic Church in Accra, among others.
“We must continue to work to preserve our culture of religious tolerance,” the president stressed.
For him, the global phenomenon of the infiltration of the communities by religious fanatics must not be lost on Muslims.
“I encourage you to report suspicious characters who come into your community to take advantage of our world acclaimed hospitality to unleash mayhem on our country to the police.”
He also advised Muslims, and Ghanaians in general, to “exercise restraint in the face of provocation”.
