Africa’s FIFA World Cup Qualifiers pick back up this week, with 11 fixtures broadcast live from Matchday 5, running from Wednesday 19 to Friday 21 March 2025.

There is no better place to get your season-long ticket to the best football the world has to offer than DStv!

One of the major narrative threads for this Matchday will be the performance of Nigeria, who need to recover from a slow start in Group C which has seen them claim just three points from a possible 12 thus far.

The Super Eagles will enter a new era on Friday when they face group leaders Rwanda at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali, as it will be the first game in charge for new coach Eric Chelle.

The former Mali international will bring the West African heavyweights back to their best, according to former Nigeria captain Joseph Yobo: “There’s a new coach for the Super Eagles and I expect the players to be on top of their game to prove to him they are good enough to play for Nigeria.”

The former Everton player added, “This is what often happens in clubs with new coaches. So, I expect the Super Eagles to be at their best. He has been appointed as the Super Eagles coach and we should give him maximum support. As a former coach of Mali, he has the experience and knowledge of African football and we will be playing against African teams, not England.”

The other Group C matches see South Africa and Zimbabwe play host to Lesotho and Benin respectively. The Warriors have recalled veterans Knowledge Musona and Khama Billiat in an effort to spark their campaign back to life.

“I want to thank the nation and everyone supporting the national team for our call-up,” Billiat said. “We have a lot of great players and we are given the opportunity to represent our nation so we are grateful. Now, it is about how we will apply ourselves to represent our nation.”

The Group F meeting of Gambia and Kenya in Abidjan on Thursday is another to watch, as the Harambee Stars have their first game under the guidance of coach Benni McCarthy, while Friday also features Ghana chasing a home win against Chad in a Group I game in Accra, as well as a late, late kick-off in Casablanca, where Ethiopia ‘host’ Egypt in Group A.

The Pharaohs have controversially omitted Egyptian Premier League top scorer Emam Ashour of Al Ahly, but the presence of Liverpool star Mohamed Salah should still ensure that the North Africans remain potent in attack.
