Upper East Regional Minister Tangoba Abayage has beaten Aviation Minister Joseph Kofi Kowe Adda to represent the New Patriotic Party in Navrongo Central.
She won with 313 votes in the primary held Saturday morning. Mr Adda who is the incumbent MP for the area garnered 269 votes.
Mrs Abayage is the first woman ever to have won the NPP parliamentary primary in the constituency and this also becomes her attempt to enter parliament.
She took to Facebook to comment after her victory:
As a gender activist with 30 years experience, Ms Abayage has served in various capacities including Regional Director of the Department of Gender in the Upper East, Central and Western regions.
She is also a former Ghana Ambassador to Rome, and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Administration (Human Resource Management) from the University of Ghana, Legon.
Between 1998 and 2007, Ms Abayage designed, produced and presented a programme known as “Women in Development” at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation’s GBC- URA Radio at Bolgatanga.
Mr Adda on the other hand entered parliament in 2003 through a by-election following the death of John Setuni Achuliwor.
He went ahead to win the seat in the subsequent elections in 2004 and 2008 but lost in 2012 to the National Democratic Congress’ Mark Woyongo. Four years after, he managed to beat Mark Woyongo to win the seat in the 2016 general elections.
