Organisers of the Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup have commended former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his generous contributions towards the annual tournament.
Since 2015, the community football gala brings together youth from Zongo communities, and it has become a consistent feature on the calendar of activities to mark the end of Ramadan.
This year’s edition comes off Monday at the Madina Astro Turf with 16 Zongo communities participating.
In a post on the official Facebook page of the tournament, Dr. Bawumia was commended by organisers for what they described as his “consistent support” towards the successful organisation of the tournament.
“We wish to express our utmost gratitude to former Vice President, H. E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for coming through to support us, once again.
“His consistent support towards the Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup over the years, has contributed immensely to bringing youth of our Zongo communities together through football,” the post read, accompanied by a picture of the former Vice President with some past winners of the competition.
Over the past 10 years, Dr. Bawumia has been a committed supporter of the annual event, and has also hosted some of the winning communities.

In 2024, he rewarded the winners, Ashaiman, with GH¢20,000 and also facilitated the construction of an astro turf for Ashaiman, which started before leaving office.
Meanwhile, this year’s edition, which is the 11th, kicks off with 16 Zongo communities participating.
Six communities out of the nearly 40 which have participated in the tournament before have won it.
Ashaiman are record winners, having won it three times, followed by Kasoa who have won it twice.
Mamobi, Nima, Madina and Adabraka have each won it once.Nsawam Zongo and Sabon Zongo from Accra, are scheduled to open the 2026 edition at 9:00am before other exciting pairings.
The grand finale is expected to be played later in the evening with a host of fans and dignitaries expected to grace it.
