President Nana Akufo-Addo has congratulated the Ayawaso West Wuogon Member of Parliament-elect, Lydia Syram Alhassan, for emerging winner in Thursday’s by-election, which was in parts disrupted by violence.
According to the president’s congratulatory message on Friday, he described Lydia’s 69% win as an “emphatic victory”.
He is confident that the MP-elect will represent the interests of her constituents in Parliament.
“I congratulate Lydia Seyram Alhassan on her emphatic victory in Thursday’s by-election, in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency. The electorate in the constituency has made an excellent choice, and I am confident she will serve their interests in Parliament with distinction,” he said.
The president also commended the Electoral Commission of Ghana on the successful conduct of the election, describing it as being “professional”, save what he observed as “isolated challenge it faced”.
While condemning the acts of violence that nearly marred the elections, the President, in the same statement, took a swipe at former president John Dramani Mahama, who has said the National Democratic Congress is ready to match the NPP with violence should acts of political vigilantism continue.
President Akufo-Addo also commended Ghanaians for their participation in the electoral process, noting it is a demonstration of “their deep attachment to the principles of democratic accountability and the rule of law”.
