President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has named Dambai as the capital for the newly created Oti region, carved out of the Volta region.
This was announced on Friday, February 15 at the forecourt of the Jubilee House where the President presented Constitutional Instrument (CI 112) to provide legal backing to the Oti region.
President Akufo-Addo also announced that current Volta Regional Minister, Archibald Letsa will act as the caretaker minister of the new Oti region until a substantive minister is appointed.
This brings to six the presentation of the Constitutional Instruments for the creation of the new regions: Oti, Savannah, North East, Bono East, Western North and the Ahafo regions.
Prior to the announcement by the President, many had tipped the likes of Kete-Krachie or Jasikan to be made the Oti regional capital.
One of such people was the Member of Parliament for Krachie West, Helen Adwoa Ntoso who argued that Kete-Krachie had all the resources to be a regional capital.
However, these calls did not birth any positive impact as the President gave the capital nod to Dambai.
The presentation of the Constitutional Instrument to provide legal backing to the Oti region now seals the creation of all six new regions, bringing the total number of regions in Ghana to 16.
Background to new regions creation
The creation of new regions became necessary after some Chiefs presented a petition to the President, calling for the creation of new regions.
Following this petition, the president established a Commission which later gave the go ahead for some six new regions to be created.
In December 2018, a referendum was held in the areas in which the proposed regions were to be created, and there was a massive “Yes” vote from the electorates.
