Personnel of the waste management company were positioned at the stadium stands to ensure sanitation was not an issue

Waste management giant Zoomlion Ghana Limited has received plaudits for its immense sanitation work at Tamale in the Northern Region before, during and after the 62 independence day celebration last Wednesday.

Ahead of the historic event held at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium, the waste management company undertook a massive clean-up exercise within Tamale and its environs to give the city a befitting status for the celebration.

All major roads within the metropolis were cleaned and washed with mechanized street sweepers and curbs painted. Principal streets were also branded with the colours of the national flag and fixed astroturf at all roundabouts in the city to give them a colour look.

Hundreds of personnel of the company were deployed to the metropolis a week to the event to ensure the city was well cleaned and befits the President’s vision of making Ghana the cleanest city.

On the day of the celebration, Zoomlion was on hand to provide sweeping and cleaning services at the venue of the Sports Stadium, and also water to service all the washrooms. Waste bins were also positioned on the streets and at vantage points in and around the stadium to further enhance the cleanliness of the city and the stadium.

Northern Regional Minster Alhaji Salifu Saed and other government officials were full of praise of the excellent work done by Zoomlion in making Tamale a clean city and colourful for the historic independence day celebration.

He reiterated the need for sustaining the clean environment and beautification of the city.

Regional General Manager of Zoomlion, Peter Dawuni, appealed to residents to take advantage of the nationwide one million bin distribution exercise being undertaken by Zoomlion and adopt a waste bin in their households in order to keep their refuse for appropriate management.Mr. John Emmanuel Kwose a Ph.D student of the University for Development Studies and a development worker was overwhelmed by the cleanliness of the city and commended Zoomlion for the resources put in place in achieving that.

He was however doubtful about whether the people will be able to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of the city.

“My only fear is that the exercise could be political, because the president was coming to the region the power players did this to camouflage him and after his visit we go back to the old days” he said.

Chief Executive Officer of Universal Developers Consultancy  (UniDeC) Kwose, also the commended Zoomlion Ghana Limited proving that it has the manpower and the resources to able to deliver. He was amazed at the work Zoomlion had done and urged the authorities to ensure that their activities were sustained and not occasional.

Mr Kwose said the forest reserves in the Tamale metropolis should be developed into forest resorts instead of leaving it for people to engage in open defecation and amorous meetings.

For his part, a businessman resident in Tamale, Mr Jones Pedavoah called for the metropolitan and municipal authorities to allow Zoomlion to manage their roundabouts, noting the beauty of the city lie in the beauty of our roundabouts and entry points.

Group Head of Communication of the Jospong Group of Companies, Mrs Sophia Lissah, urged the media to intensify public education on proper and acceptable waste management practices to augment the efforts of Zoomlion.

She also urged the citizens of Tamale and visitors to continue to keep the city clean to attract and boost tourism to enhance the local economy.

Mrs Lissah said Zoomlion will continue to do the daily cleaning and create the needed awareness to ensure a clean environment, saying that is “the job we have chosen for ourselves but the people owe it a duty to ensure the waste is properly kept for collection and onward management.”
