Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has ordered the closure of a district court in Accra.
A statement issued by the Judicial Service Thursday explained the decision to shut down the Adjabeng District Court 2 was taken by the CJ because it is “in a deplorable state and totally unfit for purpose”.
The court, it said, has since the directive on June 7 ceased to operate.
All cases before the court have thus been transferred to the Adjabeng District Court 1.
“We regret any inconvenience this decision may cause to lawyers, court users and the general public. We wish to assure our stakeholders and the general public that this decision is in the best interest of all parties and count on their cooperation in this matter,” the statement said.
The CJ who has been touring the various courts in the country to establish their safety have had cause to close down a number of courtrooms that have been found to be in bad shape
In March this year, the Accra Central District Court complex was closed down temporarily due to the dilapidated nature of its buildings.
Located behind the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, almost all the courtroom buildings are in bad shape with some of the roofs coming off and others with visible cracked walls while some of the structures are near collapsed.
The main Motor Court had its ceilings ripped off and the witness box broken, with huge cracks in the building that is filled with rickety seats in the court room including the judge’s seat.
The building which was constructed in 1992 originally as a regional tribunal, has not undergone any major renovation.
