Chinese Community in Ghana denounces Hong Kong violence

Various groups of Chinese associations, Chinese enterprises and the Chinese business community in Ghana under the umbrella of the council for the peaceful reunification of China in Ghana have come together in Accra to denounce the ongoing violent  protests taking place in the Chinese territory of Hong Kong by unrelenting groups of demonstrators.
The Chinese community in Ghana is unhappy about what they consider to be ”selective blinders” and ”irresponsible remarks” coming from the International media concerning the true situation in Hong Kong.
According to the Chinese community in Ghana, the wrong media reportage is preventing the International community from objectively understanding the violent and destructive objectives of the Hong Kong protesters.
It will be recalled that the latest wave of violent demonstrations and riots started in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of the People’s Republic of China in the past two months and have drawn great attention in the international community including from the Ghanaian media and Chinese people living in Ghana who are concerned about the chaotic developments.
These latest protests started in reaction to the HK SAR Government decision to revise the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance (Extradition Bill) between China, Macau and Taiwan.
The protests forced the Hong Kong government to withdraw the bill but the protests continued to escalate.
In a statement, the Chinese community in Ghana expressed concern for the long term prosperity of Hong Kong in the wake of the continuing violent protests.
”Preserving Hong Kong’s long-term prosperity and stability is not only in the interest of all the Chinese people, including the Hong Kong people, but it is also in the interests of the international community, including Ghana”.
They further noted, “This is precisely the objective of today’s gathering which is organized by the Council for the Peaceful Reunification of China In Ghana together with representatives from all the Chinese associations, Chinese enterprises and business community in Ghana to voice out our support and concern”.
The group praised the ”unremitting efforts” made by the Chinese Central Government and the HKSAR Government to bring peace and prosperity to Hong Kong while condemning the demonstrators who they describe as  “extremists militants” engaged in violently attacking the Hong Kong Legislative Council and intensifying their efforts to publicly deface the national emblem and insult the national flag.
“They even attacked the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Police station, blocked Hong Kong subway, airport and public transportation. These are far beyond the scope of freedom of assembly and demonstration. Even the signs of terrorism have seriously arisen”.
The council for the peaceful reunification of China in Ghana reiterated their full support for the “one country, two systems” arrangement that currently exists between China and Hong Kong, a system that is currently threatened by the ongoing violent protests.
“These violent protests have not only affected the normal life of the law abiding people of Hong Kong but also has openly challenged the bottom line of the “one country, two systems” principle and the authority of the central government”.
The Chinese community in Ghana is blaming a ”few violent radicals” for misguiding well intentioned Hong Kongers into violence.
“It must be clarified that, in the current chaos in Hong Kong, a small number of violent radicals are at the forefront with some kind-hearted citizens misguided and coerced in the middle, but the masterminds behind the scenes are the anti-China forces in and out of Hong Kong who have been trying to mess up Hong Kong,” the statement said.
“They are openly funding and supporting the radical activists, helping them to build strategies. Some of them even personally coordinated the subversive destructive movement of the riots”.
Hong Kong’s return to mainland China 22 years ago effectively implemented the policy of “one country, two systems”, “Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong” and has granted a high degree of autonomy to Hong Kong, in accordance with the Constitution of the People’s Republic of China and Hong Kong Basic Law.
Since then Hong Kong has grown and maintained a prosperous and stable financial hub, even recognized as the freest economy in the world.
Hong Kong is one of the few economies that successfully survived the Asia financial crisis and the international financial crisis.
The Council for the reunification of China in Ghana has therefore called for an immediate end to the violence and chaos and a restoration of law and order.
They called on the Hong protesters not to underestimate the determination  and strength of the Chinese Central Government and the entire Chinese people to preserve Hong Kong’s prosperity, stability and maintain the country’s fundamental interests.
