The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, (UEW) has extolled the leading role of the University in the ongoing educational reforms noting that the University continues to be associated with key educational reforms in the country and beyond.
Rev. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni averred that as a premier teacher education university, UEW has been heavily involved, playing very active role roles in the development of the new curricula for schools and teacher education in Ghana, to produce the required human resource to respond to Ghana’s developmental challenges.
“Over 80% of our academic staff have been heavily involved, playing very active roles in the development of the new curricula for schools and Transforming Teacher Education, and Learning’s (T-TEL) work”, he said.
Rev. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni was speaking at the first session of the 24th congregation for students of the 2018/19 graduating class at Winneba.
The Vice-Chancellor said the involvement of the University in the work of Transforming Teacher Education and Learning (T-TEL) is to ensure that Colleges of Education (CoEs) can produce better-trained teachers. He added that UEW has and continues to support the agenda for teachers to be well prepared and be motivated professionals dedicated to improving young minds.
He further stated that the involvement of the University’ staff’ in educational developments of Ghana, together with other stakeholders, had enabled the Government, through the Ministry of Education, to address several issues of concern in the education sector.
“Our staff’s involvement, and together with other stakeholders, has enabled the Government, through the Ministry of Education, to address issues in the education sector such as improving the curriculum, the management of CoEs and schools, expanding teacher training methods, promoting gender equity and establishing mechanisms to drive the continued development of the education sector”.
Rev. Prof. Afful-Broni also intimated that the enviable performance of the University continues to attract many more institutions which are proud to be affiliated to it for mentorship and training noting that as many as 15 of the 46 Colleges of Education have been affiliated to the University for this purpose.
He held that the contributions of UEW to educational developments in Ghana has gone a long way to underscore its relevance in providing excellence and leadership in teacher education in Ghana.
“The allocation of 15 affiliated Colleges of Education to our University is the highest any university in the country can boast of, and this goes to underscore the relevance of UEW in providing excellence and leadership in teacher education in Ghana.”
