President of Ghana Rugby, Mr. Herbert Mensah has eulogized players, technical handlers and sponsors of the Ghana Rugby for the various roles they played that made 2019 a success.
“It’s been a year of tremendous success; it’s been a year of tremendous over-achievements,” Mr. Mensah assessed in his Christmas and New Year message to the Ghana rugby family.
Although he anticipated that 2020 would be difficult, he was hopeful the family made up of persons with the right attitude and dedicated players who worked with a goal of succeeding, they will pull through.
Mr. Mensah remarked that various sporting disciplines are changing globally but with the values remaining the same, “it requires a different level of application and training, in order to be able to compete at the top”.
Mr. Mensah also urged the playing body to “fight for the positions”, noting that “nobody is guaranteed one, may be one or two, but it is wide opened. We are looking for positions everywhere.”
Some remarkable and memorable events in 2019.
- Our U20 youngsters played for the first time in a Rugby Africa tournament and despite the challenges to field a squad, we look forward to the growth in this department of our Union,
- Our Ghana Women’s Sevens Eagles surprised everybody by winning the Challenge Trophy in Tunisia in their first-ever tournament,
- The Men’s Sevens Eagles emulated the ladies’ performance by beating Morocco in a brilliant display of sevens rugby, and
- On 23 November the Ghana Men’s Fifteens Eagles avoided elimination from the new Rugby Africa Cup by beating Botswana in Ghana.
