The Education Ministry is meeting leaders of striking teacher unions today, Monday, September 28, as efforts intensify to end the nationwide action over unpaid promotion arrears and other outstanding demands.
The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, iseading the engagement with the three pre-tertiary teacher unions: the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG).
The unions declared the nationwide strike on Friday, September 25, 2026.
The meeting is expected to bring together the unions, the Education Ministry, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department.
The unions say the failure to implement an agreement between the Ministry of Education/Ghana Education Service and the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department has left affected teachers without placement on their salary scales, with arrears dating from January 2026.
In their joint declaration, the unions cited delays, unfulfilled promises by duty bearers and the FWSC, and pressure from rank-and-file members as reasons for the industrial action.
The Minister had recently met the unions alongside officials of the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department, where it was agreed that the Ghana Education Service would provide the data needed to facilitate payment of the outstanding arrears.
The Ministry’s Press Secretary, Hasmin Mohammed, said the Minister would use the meeting to persuade the unions to call off the strike.
He explained that the Ministry cannot resolve all the issues alone because the FWSC and the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department are also involved, so the meeting offers a chance for all parties to engage directly.
Mr Mohammed said the Ministry is worried about the strike’s possible impact on the academic calendar, warning that a prolonged strike could undo progress made in returning the school year to its normal schedule.
