The Tijaniyya Muslim Movement of Ghana has supported the COVID-19 Fund with GHc11,000 to aid in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
The gesture, which forms part of the social responsibility of the Muslim group is also to complement government’s move to raise more funds to tackle the virus head on.
Presenting the cash, leader of the Movement, Sheikh Abdul Wadud Ciessay Haroun, said the responsibility to fight the virus cannot be left on the shoulders of government alone.
“It is our duty as Muslims to support in any way we can when there is a national crisis. Government cannot do it all alone. That is why it is important to bring our little contributions to ease the financial burden of government. We will continue to mobilize more funds and support this cause.”
The Ashanti regional director of Ghana Health Services, Dr Emmanuel Tinkorang, who received the donation assured the Muslim group of using it for its intended purpose.
“We know Allah is in control but we also need resources and government alone cannot do it. That’s why it is important individuals and organizations support with their widow’s mite to fight our common enemy, which is COVID-19. We will use this money to buy some of the logistics we need to fight the virus.”
Dr Tinkorang appealed to Muslim leaders to educate their members and ensure they adhere to the lockdown directives to contain the spread of the deadly virus.
In a related development, the Ashanti Regional Zongo Chief has distributed over 1,000 pack of rice and other foodstuffs to the poor and vulnerable in the lockdown areas.
The food items is to help them stay home and comply with the restriction directives.
Residents in areas like Bouban, Aboabo, Asawasi, Tafo Zongo, Saabon Zongo and other Zongo communities benefited from the support.
Some excited beneficiaries thanked the Sarkin Zongo for extending a helping hand to them in this critical time.
Sultan Alhaji Umar Farouk Saeed entreated the privilege in society to support the needy with food items during this period of lockdown.
