Ghana’s coronavirus case count has shot up by 921 confirmations, from 3,091 on Wednesday, May 6 to 4,012 on Friday, May 8.
This was initially believed to come from the backlog of tests conducted by the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research into Tropical Medicine (KCCR) in Kumasi.
But the Ghana Health Service (GHS) said it is as a result of an outbreak of the deadly viral disease in an industrial facility with 1,300 workers.
Five hundred and thirty-three of the workers had their test samples confirmed positive.
It is almost two months since Ghana recorded its first case of Covid-19.
In its latest update on its portal, GHS gives the number of recoveries at 323 with no additional deaths from the previous 18.
Regional breakdown
The latest development leaves the country’s active coronavirus cases at 3,671.
A majority of this is in the Greater Accra Region, whose total case count is 3,436. It is the leading region in the overall case count.
Ashanti Region follows next with 210 confirmed cases.
Eastern Region has 96 cases while Central Region’s count of 58 is now the fourth highest in the country.
The Western North Region is now the hardest hit of the new regions created by the government. It has now recorded 56 cases, 21 more than its mother region, Western Region.
Volta Region has recorded 32 cases and this is eight more than newly-created Oti Region.
Upper East Region has recorded 26 cases while the Upper West Region has 20 cases.
The Northern Region has 16 cases with the North East Region and Bono Region on two and one respectively.
The Savannah, Bono East and Ahafo regions are still without cases.
