The National Muslim Conference (NMC) of Ghana is calling on the world to use the deadly earthquakes in Turkey and Syria to cure itself of animosity.

Over 50,000 deaths were recorded in the two countries with millions more left without shelter in the earthquakes that swept through the two countries in early February.

In a statement calling for support for Turkey and Syria, the National Muslim Conference prayed:

“It is our hope that humanity would derive from this calamity a new global order characterized by empathy rather than animosity.”

Noting that Turkey and Syria are still in need of medicine, food, and shelter to facilitate a return to normalcy, the statement asked nations, organizations, and individuals to continue the humanitarian service to mitigate their agony.

It also called on architects and allied professionals in the construction industry to think of  new architectural models that could produce earthquake-resistant buildings.

Below is the full statement

Press Statement on the Earthquake in Turkey and Syria

Message of Condolence

In The Name of Allah, The Beneficent, The Merciful

‎ إنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون

The National Muslim Conference (NMC) has been thrown into a state of devastation in the wake of  the recent fatal earthquake in the Republic of Turkey and the Syrian Arab Republic.

Indeed, our hearts are bleeding; our minds boggling; and our bodies aching. We, however, take solace in the following words of Almighty Allah:

● “Verily, we belong to Allah, and to Him we shall return.” [Quran 2: 155]

It is terrifying to observe that the death toll in the two quake-stricken countries of predominant Muslim populations continues to rise in thousands. This is, certainly, a catastrophe of alarming proportion.

We, therefore, extend to the governments and peoples of Turkey and Syria sincere condolences. We are with them in their moments of divine trial.

With the blessing of His Eminence the National Chief Imam, Chair of the Governing Council of the NMC, we extend the empathy of the Muslim Community to the family of our compatriot and football legend, Christian Atsu, who lost his life in the earthquake in Turkey.

It is our hope that humanity would derive from this calamity a new global order characterized by empathy rather than animosity.

We thank the international community, individuals, and institutions in Ghana for their humanitarian assistance to the two countries devastated by the earthquake.

We are particularly grateful to the Zakat and Sadaqa Trust Fund of Ghana, the main financier of the NMC, which has donated USD 5000 (Five thousand US dollars) to the Government of Turkey through the Turkish Embassy in Ghana in response to the disaster.

It is our belief that Turkey and Syria are still in need of medicine, food, and shelter to facilitate a return to normalcy. Let nations, organizations, and individuals continue the humanitarian service to mitigate the agony of the two nations.

To conclude, we call on architects and allied professionals in the Construction Industry to think of  new architectural models that could produce earthquake-resistant buildings.

May Allah have mercy on the dead and heal the injured. May He protect humanity against all forms of calamity. Ameen

Signed
