Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has expressed heartfelt condolences to bereaved families of six applicants who died after a stampede at El Wak Sports Stadium.
They were at the military stadium for their physical screening as part of their potential recruitment into the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).
The stampede on Wednesday, according to preliminary investigations, is said to have been caused by the surging number of applicants.
They were said to have rushed to the gates as it was opened.
Aside the six, all females, who died, several others were injured.
In a statement to mourn the tragedy, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang called for calm among Ghanaians as authorities investigate the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident.
“She extends her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wishes a speedy and full recovery to those affected,” the statement signed by Press Secretary and Spokesperson at the Office of the Vice President, Ama Pratt, said.
“The Vice President calls on all Ghanaians to remain calm as authorities conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and take urgent measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.”
A board of inquiry has been constituted by GAF to look into the incident while the process has been indefinitely suspended in the Greater Accra Region.
