Parliament has by a headcount approved President John Dramani Mahama’s nomination of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the new Chief Justice.
Having acted for sometime now, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie will now be sworn in as Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo’s replacement.
He was vetted on Monday, November 10 after his nomination was presented to Parliament and referred to the Appointments Committee.
However, the Minority boycotted the vetting, citing the multiple suits filed by removed Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo over her removal.
On the floor of the House while presenting the Committee’s report on Thursday, Chairman Bernard Ahiafor, who is also the First Deputy Speaker, noted that Justice Baffoe-Bonnie displayed deep knowledge of the law.
The Minority, however, cited the legal suits as reason they unanimously oppose the report.
The Speaker took a headcount to decide the approval or otherwise of the report.
By the headcount, 163 voted Yes and 69 voted No, resulting in the Rt Hon. Speaker declaring the approval of Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as the Chief Justice.
He consequently congratulated him as he awaits his swearing-in to officially begin his role.
