The chair of Ghana’s Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC), Richard Ellimah, has met with the Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, to discuss funding challenges facing the Committee and the need for sustainable financial support to carry out its mandate.
The meeting, held on Monday, Jan. 26, 2026, focused on constraints arising from delays and inadequacies in budgetary allocations, which PIAC says have affected its capacity to effectively monitor and evaluate the management and use of the country’s petroleum revenues.
Mr Ellimah highlighted PIAC’s statutory responsibilities under the Petroleum Revenue Management Act (PRMA), stressing that adequate and timely funding was essential to safeguarding transparency, accountability and public confidence in the handling of petroleum income.
He noted that insufficient resources undermine the Committee’s ability to conduct independent monitoring, stakeholder engagement and public reporting, all of which are central to its oversight role.
Dr Forson acknowledged PIAC’s importance as a key accountability institution within Ghana’s petroleum revenue governance framework. He assured the Committee of government’s commitment to addressing the funding challenges in order to strengthen its oversight functions.
Both sides agreed that ensuring PIAC is adequately resourced is critical to promoting prudent management of petroleum revenues and reinforcing public trust in the sector.
