Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng has described the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on the powers of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) as a decision worth celebrating, saying it has clarified the functions of the OSP and its co-existent relationship with the Attorney-General while significantly strengthening the fight against corruption.
Speaking on the back of the apex court’s decision, Mr. Agyebeng declared what he called a “rebirth” of the OSP, pledging that the office will operate without fear or favour going forward.
“We will show no fear or favour. We will remain resolute in the lawful discharge of our mandate. We will rigorously investigate cases.
“We will vigorously prosecute cases where the evidence indicate wrongdoing. We will actively recover assets. We will take all necessary steps to prevent corruption,” he said.
The Special Prosecutor acknowledged that the anti-corruption fight will continue to face pushback from corrupt actors, and reiterated the OSP’s long-standing push for expanded powers for anti-corruption agencies in two key areas.
He cited broad-based lifestyle audits and non-conviction-based asset recovery as global best practices that represent the fairest and most effective approach to tackling corruption and unexplained wealth, noting that the OSP has championed the enlargement of anti-corruption agency powers along these lines.
