Chief Executive Officer of the Media General Group Beatrice Agyemang Abbey has urged parents to prioritize the education of their female children.
She believes this is key to promoting gender equality.
Mrs Abbey said this while addressing a delegation of children from Junior Shapers Africa, following their return from a camp meeting christened ‘Future Men Boot Camp 2019’.
‘Future Men Boot Camp’ is an annual event organized by the Junior Shapers Africa to train, mentor, guide and imbibe social and academic values into boys to take up responsible roles in every sphere of life.
The boot camp, which is held separately for both genders, also serves as a platform where boys are nurtured to do feminine chores to assist their future wives, while equipping them with life skills.
Some of the boys who participated in this year’s Camp together with the founder of the NGO, paid a courtesy call on the GCEO as well as the Chief Operating Officer, Winfed Afful, after the camp meeting.
Their visit was to show appreciation to Media General for its contribution towards this year’s camp.
Mrs. Abbey commended the participants for availing themselves to be mentored and ushered into becoming responsible adults.
She said girl child education must be the focus for parents.
“If we train young boys they can become better husbands for us, but we only focus on training the girl child on how to cook, dress and talk and leave the boys to read and they grow up expecting their wives to do all the household chores,” she said.
She added: “It is nice if you have a supporting husband who is willing to change the diaper, take care of the child and knows how to talk to the mother well.”
According to her, fathers who do not receive training become monsters to their families hence, the need to drift away from that.
On his part, Mr Afful admonished the children to focus on developing their dreams if society would not support their cause.
He urged the children to take advantage of all opportunities that would come their way and try to learn different things each day.
“Don’t be too complacent that because I can do this, I would not pay attention to my books.”
The Founding Director of Junior Shapers Africa, Ethel Adjorlolo Marfo, was happy her foundation is making an impact regarding the development of both male and female children in the country.
She said values imbibed in the children are effectively monitored to yield the necessary result.
