Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has charged the newly sworn-in governing boards of four key health institutions to demonstrate bold leadership, accountability, and innovation as Ghana moves to reform its health sector and achieve universal health coverage.
The swearing-in ceremony, held in Accra, brought together board members of the Medical and Dental Council, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), the Pharmacy Council, and the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives—agencies responsible for regulation and financing within the health system.
In his address, Minister Mintah Akandoh described the appointments as a call to national service at a time when Ghana faces growing health challenges including non-communicable diseases, an ageing population, workforce attrition, and rising patient expectations.
“Our vision is ambitious,” the Minister said. “We must deliver universal health coverage, restore public confidence, and operationalise initiatives like the Ghana Medical Trust Fund—MahamaCares.”
He urged the Medical and Dental Council to ensure high standards in training and ethical practice, especially as clinicians will be on the frontline of delivering chronic care under the new Trust Fund.
To the NHIA, Minister Mintah Akandoh stressed the need to reform the national health insurance scheme by aligning its benefits with government priorities, speeding up claims processing, and ensuring provider accountability. He highlighted the government’s move to uncap the health insurance levy as a major opportunity to strengthen the Authority’s operations.
The Pharmacy Council was reminded of its responsibility to safeguard the distribution of medicines, crack down on opioids, and collaborate with the private sector and FDA to ensure a robust pharmaceutical supply chain.
The Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives was tasked with enhancing the capacity of frontline workers through advanced training and supporting efforts to stem health worker migration.
“Beyond your mandates, this moment calls for unity and bold governance,” Minister Mintah Akandoh concluded.
