Minority boycotts vote on Otiko’s ‘successful’ approval

The Minority in Parliament on Tuesday, February 7 abstained from a voting process to decide on the approval of Otiko Afisah Djaba as Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection.

The report on the minister-designate came up on the floor again after it was deferred last Friday.

After the disagreements over the report, Speaker Mike Oquaye ordered the issue to be put to voting.

But the Minority members present decided to stay away from the exercise, insisting that they do not approve of the nomination of New Patriotic Party’s National Women’s Organiser.

Members of the Minority on the Appointments Committee expressed dissatisfaction at Ms Djaba’s performance on Monday, January 30, when she was vetted.

Aside her seeming intransigence to retract a comment she made about former President John Dramani Mahama as demanded by Ranking Member and Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu, Ms Djaba is said to have no national service experience.

A waiver was said to have been submitted on her behalf by the National Service Scheme, as related by Speaker Oquaye, but the Minority insisted that the nominee does not deserve their countenance.

The voting exercise was, therefore, conducted by only members of the Majority.

All members of the Minority whose names were mentioned declined to vote.

All 152 members present voted in support of her nomination while there was no vote in disagreement.

Meanwhile, even before the last was seen of her nomination in Parliament, Ms Djaba was seated at the Flagstaff House among the second batch of ministers-designate to be sworn in by the President.

She was pictured on Tuesday evening in a resplendent garb, awaiting to swear the oaths of office and allegiance to start her functions.
