Adonten, Aburi Sec Tech brawl leaves 5 injured

Students of Adonten Senior High School (ADONSCO) and Aburi Secondary Technical (Aburi Sec Tech) in the Akuapem South District of the Eastern Region have for the past two weeks been engaged in perennial free-for-all fights resulting in injuries.

Currently, five students have sustained knife injuries, the most serious affecting the scrotum and testicles of a student.

The fight, according to Media General’s Castro Amoako, who is stationed at Aburi, normally happens at nights.

The situation, according to some parents and residents of Aburi, may affect the ongoing West African Secondary Schools Certificate Examinations (WASSCE).

In an interview on Onua FM’s Yen Sempa on Monday, our reporter explained that “the one who had injuries in the testicles has been treated and discharged. About five people have been injured so far and a student of Adonten Secondary School sustained the scrotum injury”.

He said in the night students of ADONSCO would sneak through the bushes to the campus of Aburi SHTS to fight them and in the next night, students of Aburi Sec Tech would also sneak to the campus of ADONSCO to retaliate.

Asked whether there are no fenced walls on these two schools to prevent them from sneaking in and out, Castro Amoako explained that Adonten SHS has a wall but portions have collapsed while that of the Sec Tech is being fenced though not yet completed.

He said the latest clash, which occurred a couple of days ago, took the intervention of the Divisional Police, headed by Superintendent Comfort Antwi, to separate the students.

The police, Yen Sempa understands, are investigating the matter but all efforts to reach the Divisional Police Commander have proven futile as she could not answer her mobile phone.

The President of the Akuapem Traditional Council, Otubuor Gyan Kwasi II, who is the Chief of Aburi, when contacted explained that the issue had not come to his attention.

He, therefore, promised to visit the schools and speak to the relevant authorities on what actually transpired and the way forward.

The DCE for Akuapem South, Frank Aidoo, when contacted told Yen Sempa host, Bright Kwasi Asempa, that “there is peace between them but a slight incident occurred last week”.

“The police is handling the issue now and it is not true someone has been injured on the scrotum. I have spoken to the District Education Director on the issue and he gives me briefings every week. The police commander also gives me briefing everyday.”

The DCE promised that he will investigate the issue and bring the perpetrators to book.

“We shall investigate and bring the perpetrators into book.”

Mr. Aidoo denied the assertions that the schools are not fenced.

“Both schools have walls, but the Sec Tech is not complete while portions of Adonten [SHS] have broken down,” he explained.
