Tongan Prime Minister Akilisi Pohiva has challenged other Pacific Island leaders to participate in a year-long weight-loss challenge to set an example to their national communities. Mr Pohiva told a local newspaper he would propose the competition when the leaders meet next month. Ten of the islands sit at the top of the world obesity rate rankings. On some, up to 90% of the population are overweight, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). The region’s obesity epidemic has been blamed on traditional diets of fish and vegetables being shunned for processed food imports and fatty meat. In the interview…

The Austrian capital, Vienna, has beaten Australia’s Melbourne to be named the world’s most liveable city. It’s the first time a European city has topped the rankings of the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) annual survey. The worldwide league table ranks 140 cities on a range of factors, including political and social stability, crime, education and access to healthcare. In the survey, Manchester saw the biggest improvement of any European city, rising by 16 places to rank 35th. Manchester’s rise puts it ahead of London in the rankings by 13 places, the widest gap between the two cities since the survey…
The Member of Parliament for Yunyoo Constituency in the Northern Region, Joseph Bipoba Naabu, has stated that Ghana is an independent country and even though it belongs to an international association, it should still act on the laws of its jurisdiction. According to him, the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) is taking the wrong decision if it bans Ghana simply because of the refusal to withdraw the court case seeking to dissolve the Ghana Football Association (GFA). “We should disregard FIFA, if they think they are above the laws of Ghana, we don’t need them,” he mentioned. Ghana’s football…
Drivers of members of Ghana’s Parliament have petitioned leadership of the House – particularly the Speaker – to take steps to improve their general conditions of service. According to them, most of their engagements have been by word of mouth from their employers. In the petition addressed to Speaker Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, the Association of Members of Parliament Chauffeurs of Ghana Association said they are demanding an increase in salaries to “help us to survive in the economy”. “Our services with our employers are not secured to the manner of our engagement,” the petition signed by General Secretary Farouk…

A major motorway bridge has collapsed near the Italian city of Genoa, leading to vehicles falling some 100m (328ft). Italian Transport Minister Danilo Toninelli said it was likely to be “an immense tragedy”, while police sources said at least 10 people had died. The head of the local ambulance service was quoted by one source as saying there were “dozens of dead”. Video footage appears to show one of the towers holding up the suspension bridge collapsing in stormy weather. The police linked it to what they called a violent cloudburst. The collapsed section had mostly fallen onto rail tracks…
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has given the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) a 72-hour ultimatum to release its share of the 80-month contribution, failure of which it will embark on strike. The teachers claim NPRA has turned itself into a custodian and a fund manager at the same time against the National Pensions Act, Act 766. “What is even more serious is that contributors go to NPRA for their benefits and NPRA rather refers the retirees back to the teacher unions for the payment of their benefits,” General Secretary David Ofori-Acheampong revealed on Tuesday while addressing journalists…
