The Acting Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Emmanuel Kofi Nti, has written to all banks operating in Ghana to discontinue forthwith the charging of taxes on financial services. This follows the passing of the Value Added Tax (Amendment) Act by Parliament. The amendments were proposed as part of the 2017 budget statement and economic policy delivered by Minister of Finance and Economic Planning Ken Ofori-Atta in Parliament on March 2. The state of Israel is fully behind Ghana in the resurgent fight against illegal small-scale mining, its envoy to Accra has said. Ami Mehl says his country is ready to support Ghana in any capacity “to recover from environmental degradation” caused by illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey. The Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyemang Manu, has directed that the recruitment of casual health workers should cease forthwith. The General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) of Ghana has lauded the ‘Planting for Food and Job’ project by the ruling government. GAWU says such an initiative is “seeking to increase food production and it is a laudable project”.
