US Agency for International Development (USAID) Ghana Mission Director Andrew Karas travelled to the Volta Region between January 24 and January 27 to visit USAID projects working to increase access to quality healthcare and education. During the trip, Mr. Karas met with a number of USAID partners and reiterated the US government’s support for promoting opportunity and development in the Volta Region by investing in its people. Dangote Rice, a subsidiary of Dangote Group, is set to launch in Sokoto state its multi-million naira 25,000 hectares of rice outgrower scheme with a prospect of hundreds of thousands of employment opportunities for the rural communities inhabitants. Former Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram Constituency Enoch Teye Mensah has offered himself up for elections as Greater Accra Region’s representative on the Council of State. A court in Pakistan has banned public celebrations of Valentine’s Day in the capital, Islamabad, on the grounds that it is not part of Muslim culture. The Islamabad High Court’s order prohibits all Valentine’s Day festivities in government offices and public spaces with immediate effect. It also directs the media not to promote or cover Valentine’s events. The orders were a response to a private petition which argued that Valentine’s Day was contrary to Islamic teaching. Car giant Ford has announced that it is investing $1bn (£800m) over the next five years in artificial intelligence (AI) company Argo. The firms will collaborate on developing a virtual driver system for driverless cars. Ford intends to have an autonomous vehicle ready to launch in 2021.
