The General Legal Council (GLC) has been dragged to the Supreme Court of Ghana for engaging in an alleged illegality by subtly amending the law prohibiting lawyers from touting and advertisement without recourse to Parliament. The Legal Profession Rules of 1969, L.I. 613 and the Code of Ethics of the Ghana Bar Association passed pursuant to section 7(2) (b) and 15 of the Professional Bodies Registration Decree of 1973 (NRCD 143) prohibit lawyers from touting and advertisement. A total of 16 mentally deranged persons who were chained to trees for years and forced to fast to fast with no or little medical attention have been rescued. Some the victims have been at the unnamed prayer camp at Nyankumasi Ahenkro in the Assin South District of the Central Region for 17 years, most of which time they are chained. Hanoi – a city of five million motorbikes – is planning on banning the popular two-wheeled transport by 2030. The city council voted for the ban almost unanimously, hoping to unclog roads and reduce soaring levels of pollution. The council has also promised to increase public transport so that half the population are using it by 2013, instead of the current 12%. But some residents think it very unlikely the bikes will go for good. The United Nations has announced the appointment of Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka of South Africa as Executive Director of UN-Women for a another term of four years. This follows consultations among Secretary-General António Guterres, member states and the Executive Board of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women (UN-Women). The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has warned it will exhume corpses buried at the various cemeteries within the metropolis without the proper payments and permits. According to the AMA, some people have been burying corpses without recourse to the Assembly, noting such individuals connive with grave wardens to bury their corpses without paying for the grave space. Female staff have been told not to show any cleavage, wear brightly coloured nails, braids or hair extensions, sleeveless or transparent blouses. Men must wear long-sleeved shirts, jackets and ties, while trousers should not be tight-fitting. Staff failing to comply will be disciplined.
