The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) is inviting other opposition parties as well as pressure groups to forge a united front to drive the New Patriotic Party out of power, and keep the National Democratic Congress in opposition. For two decades, general elections have been a two-horse race between the two largest parties – NPP and NDC – with little or no chance for the other parties to form government. About a week ago, the National Committee of the PPP approved a resolution to work to establish a strong, viable alternative political movement in Ghana, the party announced. “After careful consideration,…

This week, I have several things on my mind to comment on as every day comes with its issues. I begin with the issue of the 60th Anniversary cloth. It happened that, Ghana marked the 60th milestone of its existence with a colourful ceremony, graced by international guests. The display of military precision by the security services and students from various first and cycle schools was something worthy of loud applause. Remarkably, our three living past presidents and the widow of our former president who died in office were all at the ceremony and added to our national cohesion and…
Depression, also known as clinical depression and major depressive disorder (MDD), is one of the least understood disorders of our time. People have a tendency to disregard what they can’t physically see as an occasional mood-swing or a short-lived bout of despondency, nothing a tub of chocolate ice cream and a good night’s sleep can’t fix. For such people, “disorder” and “disease” are terms reserved for things that are more serious, and “feeling depressed” just doesn’t cut it. Nothing is more harmful to a patient of depression than such ignorant and flippant views. According to the World Health Organization (WHO),…

A Ghanaian woman who was deported from Britain while undergoing treatment for terminal cancer has died in her home country just hours before friends learned of plans to bring her back to the UK for private treatment. Ama Sumani suffered from malignant myeloma and was receiving kidney dialysis at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, but was deported after her UK visa expired. Her removal from hospital by immigration officials in January was described as “atrocious barbarism” by the leading medical journal the Lancet. Among her supporters was the Archbishop of Wales, Barry Morgan, who said today: “I am…
The chairman of Civil Technical Division of Ghana Institution of Engineers, Joseph Oddei wants a second look at the current structural designs in constructing educational facilities at all levels. According to the civil engineer, security of students are being compromised for beauty and modernity, a situation he said if not reversed could lead to more tragedies in schools. Mr. Joseph Oddei’s suggestion follows the death of a final year student of the University of Ghana who allegedly fell from a fourth floor. She was a Consumer Science and Agric student, and fell from the balcony of the Akuafo Hall, Legon…
Hiplife artiste Okyeame Kwame has revealed that heaven could be boring so he prefers to continue staying on earth after he dies because life on earth is exciting.
