The paramount chief of Sefwi Wiawso Traditional Area, Katakyei Kwasi Bumankamah II, has appealed to the Chief Justice Georgina T. Wood and the government to construct a new High Court building for the people in the area. Currently, the court which is being housed in a dilapidated one-storey building, has become a disincentive to the users of the place, especially lawyers most of who refuse to have their cases heard in that court. A total of 1,345 trainee teachers covering four academic years, have graduated from the Gbewaa College of Education in Pusiga District of the Upper East Region. Of the number are 939 regular students, 322 UTDBE students, 84 sandwich students. The Sekondi High Court presided over by Justice Edward Amoako Asante on Monday remanded five Chinese and their five Ghanaian accomplices for allegedly engaging in illegal mining. They were arrested last Friday for conducting their activities at Ankobra river cutting across two communities – Bamiankor and Duwale – in the Nzema East district of the Western region. Some executives of the New Patriotic Party in the Ejisu-Juaben Municipality have joined forces with a group of the party’s youth to resist any attempt to appoint a non-indigene as the Municipal Chief Executive. They have vowed to resist anyone appointed by the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who is not a native of the area. Mrs Samira Bawumia, wife of the Vice President, has expressed concern about the rate of pregnancy among adolescent girls in Ghana. Though adolescent pregnancies declined from 12.1 percent in 2015 to 11.8 percent in 2016, Mrs Bawumia said the rate needs further reduction if Ghana is to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 5 which targets gender equality and women empowerment by 2030. The Bank of Ghana has fixed the country’s monetary policy rate at 23.5 per cent, indicating a 200 basis point reduction from the previous rate of 25.5 per cent. The new figure was announced Monday by the governor of the Bank, Dr. Abdul Nashiru Issahaku, at the second Monetary Policy Committee meeting for2017. The Christian Children’s Fund of Canada has launched its flagship project to promote safe delivery and reduce maternal and infant mortality in the Northern Region. The project christened CCFC- PROMISE would also improve delivery of essential health services to mothers, pregnant women, new born, and children under five years. Claims that Ameri Energy is getting in excess of US$150 million as commission on the Ameri power deal and other findings in a committee’s report could be speculative, Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko tells TV3.
