The Supreme Court will on January 25, 2023 deliver a judgment on the constitutionality of the payment of salaries and allowances to spouses of the President and the Vice-President. A seven-member panel of the court was expected to deliver its decision yesterday but the Registrar of the Court announced in the courtroom that the judgment had been adjourned to next year. The case is a consolidation of two different suits filed by two National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament (MPs) — Mr Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, South Dayi, and Dr Clement Apaak, Builsa South, and the Bono Regional Chairman of the…
A Ranking Member on Parliament’s Finance Committee, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has alleged that a number of marriages have collapsed with others on the verge of hitting the rocks due to the current economic woes Ghanaians are experiencing under the Akufo-Addo government. Mr. Forson observed that many marriages have gone sour due to the inability of husbands to cater for their homes. The vociferous legislator for the Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam constituency said the massive cost of living is having a heavy toll on the citizens, bemoaning the lack of efforts by the government to solve the crippling economy. Debating the 2023 budget…

Speaking to a cross section of the media in the Eastern Regional capital, Koforidua, over the weekend, he called on delegates to vote for him massively. Mr. Ofosu Ampofo who is seeking to retain his position said Asiedu Nketia will suffer a humiliating defeat if he refuses to…
After several attempts to reach an agreement with government over an increment in their base pay, the Trades Union Congress (TUC) is expected to meet government on Wednesday to finalise a deal. But before that meeting gets underway, the Trades Union Congress is warning that it will not accept government’s projections in the 2023 Budget. The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, reading the 2023 Budget in Parliament projected compensation of employees at GH¢44,990 million (5.6% of GDP). Earlier, government also proposed a 12% salary increment during the last negotiation with Organised Labour but it was turned down. Speaking on JoyNews’ PM…
An election petition against the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Techiman South 2020 has been thrown away by the High Court in Wenchi. The petitioner, who is the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the election, was seeking the nullification of the poll which saw the NPP candidate, Martin Agyei Mensah Korsah, emerge victorious. The NDC cited irregularities in collation of results and subsequent declaration as some of the reasons for the petition. The party believed that the verdict was stolen for the NPP candidate by the elections management body for which they went to court. But…
International ratings agency, Moody’s has downgraded Ghana’s ratings by two levels to Ca from Caa2 or further junk status, which is the second-lowest score. The latest score puts Ghana in the same category with Sri Lanka, which is in default. This concludes the review for downgrade that was initiated on September 30, 2022. “The Ca rating reflects Moody’s expectation that private creditors will likely incur substantial losses in the restructuring of both local and foreign currencies debts planned by the government as part of its 2023 budget proposed to Parliament on 24 November 2022″, a statement published on its website…
Government has been urged to increase the school feeding grant from GH₵1.00 to GH₵5.00 for each pupil. The Ghana Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) who made the call said the GH₵1.00 which is even taxable, leaving the caterers with just O.97 pesewas per head, was hugely inadequate. The Ghana School Feeding Programme is 100 percent government of Ghana funded with technical support from development partners. The programme has recently been dogged by delay in payment to caterers who are asked to prefinance the feeding programme. The Communications Director for the Coalition, Adokwei Ayikwei-Awulley, told Joy News on Tuesday that, the…
Government has been asked to expand access to law education by implementing viable alternative training modules. The Vice Chancellor of CU, Professor Bill Buenar Puplampu, suggested that Ghana moved “towards a training/examination/licensure structure that allows aspiring people to acquire the needed theoretical and applied training from specifically accredited Law Faculties.” Those who pass by set criteria can then go on to take the Bar exam organized by the Law School as an examining body,” observing that “the burden would then fall on the student to choose the best Law Faculty for their training.” He lauded the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission…
