The Eastern Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Afful Boakye Yiadom, says no police officer or suspects in police cells in the region has contracted the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. “No infection has also been recorded among the prisoners in our custody,” he stated DCOP Boakye Yiadom was speaking at the launch of the disinfection and fumigation exercise of police facilities in his region. Two persons, an officer at the Tamale Central Prisons and a food vendor also in Tamale, the Northern regional capital, have tested positive for COVID-19. The Northern regional director of health service Dr. John Eleeza, who disclosed this to the media said both patients are undergoing treatment. The Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC), a civil society network championing the right to quality basic education for all children, has urged the Government to ensure that all teachers undergo mandatory testing before going back to school. An Accra Circuit Court on Wednesday sentenced a 22 year old unemployed to 10 years imprisonment in hard labour for impregnating a 15 year old daughter of a co-tenant at Bubuashie in Accra. Frederick Laryea, charged with defilement pleaded guilty. Central Regional Minister Kwamena Duncan has underscored the need for police cells in the country to be disinfected every quarter. While condemning what he termed the “degrading conditions” in Ghana’s police cells, he explained a quarterly disinfection of cells will not only keep them safe but also ensure that they habitable for human beings.
