It’s difficult for Africa to engage in the climate negotiations without emotions, says Ambassador Tosi Mpanu Mpanu, a top African climate negotiator. As a continent that contributed least to climate change, Africa remains most vulnerable to the impacts – experiencing increasing extreme weather events such as cyclones, droughts, floods and desertification. Historically, Africa is the continent with the lowest carbon footprint. But the latest report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) indicates that Africa will be impacted at least 20C more than the average – if the warming is 1.50C in other continents, Africa could be experiencing 3.50C.…
The National Communications Authority (NCA) has described as “utterly false” claims that it intends shutting down two Accra-based radio stations. It’s being speculated on social media that the regulator had wanted to shut down Joy 99.7FM and Asempa 94.7FM on Sunday, December 8, 2019. But the NCA in a statement on Monday asked the general public to “disregard” the information because it is “false”. The statement recounted the back and forth legal tussles the regulator has been having with management of the two stations, insisting it is only applying the law. “The Authority only seeks to ensure compliance with the…
Not a day goes by without one seeing fresh evidence of why technology is changing everything in the world. Everything that was once new is now old. Shadowy operatives can take control of the world’s most powerful democracy, USA, using strange tools on social media, and nuclear facilities can be taken down by something called a computer virus. Money is now being minted by young boys in their pajamas on their laptop and sent through something called “blockchain” that no one above forty years really understand. Here in Ghana, the Government can’t stop talking about “digitization”. Tiny planes called “drones”…
A Supreme Court nominee, Justice Mariama Owusu, has rejected widely held perception that decisions and judgements of judges are influenced by the political regimes under which they were appointed. The Court of Appeal judge, who is being vetted for a Supreme Court job, told a parliamentary committee Monday that decisions of judges are based purely on the laws of the land. She explained that judges have taken “oath to administer justice to all manner of people” irrespective of their religious background, political leanings or whoever appointed them. “It doesn’t matter who appointed you,” she maintained, indicating that the sole aim of…
Power cuts, technical hitches, intermittent delays and a ‘no show’ by dancehall artiste Shatta Wale and rapper Sarkodie took the shine off the Livespot X Festival, headlined by American rapper, Cardi B. Unhappy with the turn of events, frustrated fans pelted organisers and asked for a refund. Hundreds of patrons who showed up at the Accra Sports Stadium Sunday night were left disappointed as they had to wait for hours before the show officially began. The show was to start at 8:00 p.m. but it was until 10:30 p.m. that it got underway without any explanation whatsoever from organisers. Cardi…
High cost of utilities is impacting negatively on hotel business in the country, President of the Ghana Hotels Association, Dr Edward Ackah-Nyamike Jnr, has said. The development, he stated, has resulted in high operational cost for the industry. The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) on September 30, 2019 announced a 5.94% increment in electricity and 2.22% for water across board. The increment was necessitated by the Ghana Cedi-US dollar exchange rate, inflation, price of crude and natural gas, fuel mix, power purchase cost and electricity cost. “This is a sector that uses a lot of services. We are talking about…
